Colmar (2) Day Trip to Castle Haut-Koenigsbourg and the town of Kayserberg
On our second day in the Colmar region we traveled, first, to a medieval castle reconstructed and expanded at the direction of the German Emperor Wilhelm II of Hohenzollern, then to the village of Kayserberg, birthplace of the famed humanitarian Dr. Albert Schweitzer. The refurbished castle was intended as a symbol of German dominance over the region of Alsace.
Apart from political aims, the furnishings and weaponry in the castle were intended to illustrate the material side of life and changes in weaponry from circa the 15th century through the 17th century.
